Geranium, specifically the essential oil derived from Pelargonium graveolens, has a long history of traditional use for treating minor skin injuries such as scratches and abrasions. Folk medicine practices in regions such as Africa and the Mediterranean have employed geranium leaves and oil for their purported wound-healing, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. The application of geranium oil is believed to help cleanse wounds, reduce the risk of infection, and promote faster healing. While there is anecdotal and ethnobotanical documentation supporting these uses, robust scientific studies on geranium oil’s efficacy for treating superficial skin injuries are limited. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated the antimicrobial activity of geranium oil against common skin pathogens, which could theoretically help prevent infection in minor wounds.
