Glycerite, which refers to a solution where glycerin is used as a solvent to extract herbal constituents, is traditionally used in herbal medicine to support the healing of scratches and abrasions. The rationale behind its use is largely rooted in the properties of glycerin itself—a humectant that helps maintain moisture, which can aid in the healing of minor wounds by keeping the tissue hydrated and preventing scab formation that might impede healing. Many herbalists use glycerites made from plants with reputed soothing or antimicrobial properties (such as calendula or chamomile) as topical applications for skin injuries.

However, scientific validation for glycerite as a specific remedy for scratches and abrasions is limited. While glycerin is recognized in dermatology for its moisturizing effects and its inclusion in wound care products, the evidence supporting the efficacy of glycerites (glycerin-based herbal extracts) for wound healing is mostly anecdotal or based on traditional use. No substantial clinical trials directly support their use for scratches and abrasions, and evidence for the effectiveness of the herbal extracts themselves (when delivered in glycerin) is also weak or indirect. Thus, while there is a tradition of use and a plausible mechanism of action via moisture retention, the overall evidence base is modest.
