Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lichen oil, derived from various species of lichens, has a long history of traditional use in folk medicine for the treatment of minor skin conditions, including scratches and abrasions. Lichens have been used in different cultures for their supposed antimicrobial and wound-healing properties, often applied topically in the form of poultices, salves, or oils. Some of these traditional uses are attributed to secondary metabolites in lichens, such as usnic acid, which has demonstrated antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies. However, clinical studies specifically evaluating lichen oil for wound healing, or for the treatment of scratches and abrasions in humans, are lacking. The available evidence is primarily anecdotal or based on ethnobotanical records rather than rigorous scientific trials. While in vitro studies support some antimicrobial effects of lichen extracts, there is insufficient direct clinical evidence to confirm efficacy or safety for treating skin abrasions. Therefore, the use of lichen oil for scratches and abrasions is justified mainly by traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation.
