Evidence supporting the use of: Mariposa Lily
For the health condition: Scratches and Abrasions
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Mariposa Lily (Calochortus spp.) has a history of use among various Native American groups, primarily in western North America. Traditional uses of Mariposa Lily mainly focused on its bulbs as a food source, but there are scattered historical references to its use in topical applications for minor wounds, scratches, and abrasions. For example, the Northern Paiute and some other tribes reportedly used mashed bulbs or poultices from Mariposa Lily as a soothing agent for minor skin injuries. However, these uses are not widespread or well-documented compared to other medicinal plants with strong reputations for wound care.
There is currently no scientific research validating the efficacy of Mariposa Lily for treating scratches or abrasions. No modern studies identify active antimicrobial or healing compounds unique to this plant that would justify its use over better-known remedies. Thus, while it has some basis in historical, traditional use, evidence is weak, and its use for this purpose is not supported by scientific studies. As such, it is rated low in evidence for supporting or treating scratches and abrasions.
