Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rugose rose (Rosa rugosa) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asia. Its petals, hips, and leaves have been applied topically or used in poultices to aid wound healing, including minor scratches and abrasions. The justification for this use lies primarily in folk medicine practices, where rose extracts are valued for their perceived anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. Some ethnobotanical records from China, Japan, and Korea describe the use of Rosa rugosa preparations in treating cuts, wounds, and skin irritations. However, the scientific evidence directly supporting these applications is limited. While laboratory research shows that rose extracts can exert mild antimicrobial and antioxidant effects, clinical trials specifically validating the efficacy of Rugose rose for abrasions and scratches are lacking. Thus, while its usage for minor skin injuries is well-documented in traditional systems, rigorous scientific validation is minimal, and the evidence rating remains low.
