Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Albizia, particularly Albizia lebbeck and Albizia julibrissin, has a long history of traditional use in various medical systems, especially in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, Albizia julibrissin (commonly called He Huan Pi or "silk tree bark") is used to "calm the spirit," alleviate anxiety, and support emotional wellbeing. While these indications broadly relate to the nervous system, some traditional sources also describe the use of Albizia for conditions affecting the eyes, such as inflammation or visual disturbances, thus linking it to the Senses body system. In Ayurveda, Albizia lebbeck is used for its anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties, with some references to treating eye disorders (e.g., conjunctivitis) and improving vision. However, there is a lack of robust modern scientific evidence to support Albizia’s efficacy specifically for the Senses body system, such as vision or hearing. Few preclinical studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically benefit sensory organs, but direct clinical research is lacking. Therefore, the use of Albizia to support the Senses body system is justified primarily by tradition, with limited supporting evidence. Its historical use in treating eye conditions and calming the mind is documented, but more rigorous scientific studies are needed to validate these applications.
