Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ginkgolide B is a terpene lactone found in Ginkgo biloba leaves and is one of the primary active constituents responsible for many of the plant’s pharmacological effects. Its use to support the "Senses" body system—primarily referring to cognitive function, vision, and hearing—has been studied with a particular focus on neurological and vascular health. Scientific evidence indicates that Ginkgolide B acts as a potent platelet-activating factor (PAF) antagonist, which may help improve microcirculation, including in the brain, retina, and inner ear. This mechanism provides a plausible rationale for its potential benefits in mitigating age-related cognitive decline, and supporting eye and ear health. However, clinical evidence for Ginkgolide B’s effectiveness is mixed. Some studies have demonstrated modest improvements in cognitive performance or in the management of conditions such as tinnitus and vertigo, but these benefits are generally attributed to standardized Ginkgo biloba extracts, not isolated Ginkgolide B. Most clinical trials use multi-component extracts, making it difficult to ascribe effects solely to Ginkgolide B. The evidence for direct improvement of “senses” such as hearing or vision is limited and not robust. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some supporting data, the overall evidence is modest, justifying a mid-to-low rating.
