Evidence supporting the use of: 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP)
For the body system: Serotonin
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is best known as a direct precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation, sleep, and appetite. Scientific studies have explored its use for increasing serotonin levels in the brain, particularly because 5-HTP can cross the blood-brain barrier and is then converted to serotonin. Several clinical trials suggest that 5-HTP supplementation may be beneficial for symptoms of depression, with some studies showing efficacy comparable to certain antidepressant medications. There is also evidence for its use in supporting sleep and reducing symptoms of fibromyalgia, which are associated with serotonin dysregulation.
However, while the mechanism by which 5-HTP supports serotonin production is well-understood, the overall quality and quantity of clinical evidence is moderate. Many studies have small sample sizes or short durations, and there is a risk of side effects, especially when combined with other serotonergic drugs. Regulatory bodies do not universally recognize 5-HTP as a treatment for mood disorders or other serotonin-related conditions. In summary, 5-HTP is scientifically justified for supporting the serotonin body system, but the evidence is not robust enough to warrant the highest confidence rating.
