Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) has been traditionally used in herbal and aromatherapy practices, particularly for its purported mood-lifting and calming effects. The association between clary sage and the serotonin system is based on traditional use and some preliminary scientific observations, but direct scientific evidence specifically connecting clary sage to serotonin modulation in humans is limited. Clary sage essential oil contains components such as linalyl acetate and linalool, which are thought to have relaxing effects on the nervous system, possibly influencing mood. Some small studies and anecdotal reports suggest that inhalation or topical application of clary sage oil may alleviate symptoms of stress and mild depression, which are conditions linked to serotonin regulation. However, these effects are not necessarily due to direct action on the serotonin system but could be related to general anxiolytic or mood-stabilizing effects commonly attributed to essential oils. At present, there is insufficient clinical research to confirm any direct effect of clary sage on serotonin levels or receptors in humans. Therefore, while clary sage is traditionally used to support emotional well-being, its use for supporting the "serotonin body system" is based more on historical practice and indirect evidence than on robust scientific validation.
