English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has a long-standing reputation in traditional herbal medicine for its calming and mood-supporting effects. In recent years, scientific research has investigated its potential influence on the serotonin system, which plays a key role in mood regulation and emotional well-being.
Several studies have examined the anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of lavender essential oil, particularly when administered orally or via aromatherapy. The most robust evidence comes from clinical trials evaluating a proprietary oral lavender oil preparation (Silexan). These studies have demonstrated reductions in symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder and subsyndromal anxiety, with efficacy comparable to some standard anxiolytic medications. The proposed mechanism involves lavender’s modulation of neurotransmitter activity, including potential effects on serotonin receptors (notably the 5-HT1A receptor), though direct serotonin level modulation in humans is less well documented.
Additional laboratory and animal studies suggest lavender extracts can influence serotonergic pathways, possibly contributing to their observed effects on mood and anxiety-like behaviors. However, while these data are promising and suggest a serotonergic mechanism, the direct impact on the human serotonin system requires further elucidation. Nevertheless, the available evidence supports the use of English Lavender as a mild, natural approach for supporting mood, likely involving some interaction with the serotonin system.
