For the body system: Serotonin
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Griffonia simplicifolia is a West African plant whose seeds are a natural source of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a direct precursor to serotonin. The use of Griffonia seeds for mood and sleep support is based on the fact that supplemental 5-HTP can cross the blood-brain barrier and be converted into serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation, sleep, and appetite. Several clinical trials have investigated 5-HTP supplementation (often extracted from Griffonia) for depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Some studies have found that 5-HTP may improve symptoms of depression, with a few suggesting efficacy comparable to conventional antidepressants, though effect sizes are generally modest and studies are often small or of limited duration. There is also some evidence that 5-HTP can enhance satiety and reduce food intake, supporting its use in weight management. However, research specifically on Griffonia extract (as opposed to isolated 5-HTP) is more limited. Furthermore, while 5-HTP increases serotonin synthesis, concerns exist regarding safety, particularly in combination with serotonergic drugs, due to potential for serotonin syndrome. Overall, the use of Griffonia to support the body’s serotonin system is grounded in scientific rationale and some clinical evidence, but larger, high-quality trials are needed to definitively establish efficacy and safety.
