Jujube seeds (Ziziphus jujuba), also known as "suan zao ren" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), have a long history of use as a calming agent and sleep aid. In TCM, jujube seed is believed to nourish the heart and calm the spirit, which conceptually aligns with modern ideas of mood and emotional regulation, including systems influenced by serotonin. Traditional uses include treatment for irritability, insomnia, and anxiety-like symptoms. However, these uses are rooted in traditional medical theory rather than direct understanding of neurotransmitters such as serotonin.

There is preliminary scientific evidence suggesting that jujube seed extracts may influence central nervous system activity. Some animal studies have reported sedative, anxiolytic, and potential antidepressant effects, possibly mediated through GABAergic mechanisms or modulation of monoamine neurotransmitters, including serotonin. However, direct, high-quality clinical evidence in humans demonstrating that jujube seed supports or modulates the serotonin system specifically is lacking. The current scientific literature provides limited support, with most data coming from preclinical (animal or in vitro) research rather than human trials.

Therefore, the use of jujube seeds to support the "serotonin body system" is primarily justified by traditional use, with only modest preliminary scientific support. More rigorous human studies are needed to clarify the connection between jujube seeds and serotonergic mechanisms.
