Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Mexican valerian (Valeriana edulis) has a long history of traditional use as a calming agent and sleep aid among indigenous peoples in Mexico and Central America. Its related species, Valeriana officinalis (European valerian), is more extensively studied and also features prominently in traditional European herbal medicine for similar uses. The connection to the serotonin system is largely extrapolated from studies on Valeriana officinalis, where some research suggests mild modulation of GABAergic and possibly serotonergic neurotransmission. However, direct clinical or preclinical evidence specifically linking Mexican valerian to effects on the serotonin system is limited or absent. The use of Mexican valerian to "support the serotonin body system" is thus rooted primarily in traditional calming and sedative uses rather than proven serotonergic action. Available scientific evidence for V. edulis is sparse, and most research focuses on its sedative or anxiolytic effects rather than direct serotonin modulation. In summary, Mexican valerian's reputation for supporting mood or sleep is based on traditional use and limited extrapolation from related species, with little direct evidence for effects on the serotonin system specifically.
