Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Nymphaea caerulea, also known as the blue lotus, has a long history of traditional use, particularly in ancient Egyptian culture, where it was valued for its psychoactive and purported mood-enhancing effects. Traditional accounts suggest it was used for its calming, mildly euphoriant properties, and was sometimes associated with spiritual or ritualistic purposes. These effects are sometimes linked anecdotally to support of the "serotonin body system"—a modern reinterpretation, as ancient users would not have categorized it this way.

From a scientific standpoint, there is very limited direct evidence to substantiate the claim that Nymphaea caerulea influences serotonin pathways in humans. Some phytochemical analyses have identified aporphine and nuciferine alkaloids in the plant, which may have mild psychoactive or sedative effects, but robust clinical trials or mechanistic studies demonstrating serotonin modulation are lacking. The use of the blue lotus for serotonin support is therefore based primarily on traditional use and anecdotal reports, not on validated scientific research. As a result, the evidence rating for supporting the serotonin body system is low.
