For the body system: Serotonin
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Salidroside is a primary bioactive compound found in Rhodiola rosea, an adaptogenic plant historically used in traditional medicine to combat fatigue and enhance mental performance. Recent scientific research has investigated its potential effects on the serotonin system, which is involved in mood regulation and cognitive function. Preclinical studies (mostly in vitro and animal models) suggest that salidroside may modulate levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, including serotonin, by inhibiting monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity and affecting serotonin transporter expression. Some rodent studies report antidepressant-like effects, possibly linked to increased serotonin levels in key brain regions. However, high-quality clinical trials in humans directly assessing the impact of salidroside on the serotonin system are limited. While some small human studies with Rhodiola extracts (which contain salidroside among other constituents) indicate reduced fatigue and improved mood, these studies often do not isolate salidroside's effects or measure serotonin levels specifically. Therefore, while there is a plausible scientific basis and some preliminary evidence for salidroside's influence on the serotonin system, the current evidence is not robust or conclusive, warranting a modest evidence rating.
