Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cistanche deserticola is primarily used to support or treat low sex drive based on traditional evidence. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Cistanche deserticola, known as "Rou Cong Rong," has a long-standing history as a tonic herb reputed to "tonify the kidney yang," which is associated with sexual vitality, fertility, and overall vigor. TCM practitioners have historically recommended it for conditions such as impotence, infertility, and general fatigue, often as part of multi-herb formulas. The traditional view holds that Cistanche improves sexual function by restoring energy and moisture to the body, especially in cases attributed to "kidney deficiency." Scientific studies on Cistanche’s effects on libido and sexual function are limited and mostly preclinical. Animal models have shown that extracts of Cistanche deserticola may increase testosterone levels and improve sexual behavior parameters in rats, possibly through modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and antioxidant effects. Some studies have identified compounds such as echinacoside and acteoside that may contribute to these effects. However, robust human clinical trials are lacking, and the overall quality of available evidence is low. As such, while Cistanche deserticola is widely used traditionally for low sex drive, scientific validation remains preliminary and insufficient to draw firm conclusions.
