Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Citrulline is an amino acid that has been investigated for its potential to support sexual function, primarily due to its role as a precursor to nitric oxide (NO) via conversion to arginine in the body. Nitric oxide is a key mediator in vasodilation, which is critical for erectile function. Several small clinical studies have evaluated the effect of citrulline supplementation on erectile dysfunction (ED), which can be a factor in low sex drive, particularly in men. For example, a 2011 pilot study published in Urology found that men with mild ED who took citrulline supplementation reported improvements in erection hardness compared to placebo. However, this and similar studies have been small, short in duration, and sometimes methodologically limited.

While the mechanism—improving blood flow via NO production—is plausible and supported by some experimental evidence, robust clinical trials directly assessing the impact of citrulline on sex drive (libido), as opposed to erectile function, are lacking. Most evidence pertains to physical aspects of sexual performance rather than desire itself. Thus, while there is some scientific support for the use of citrulline in addressing certain sexual performance issues (mainly erectile dysfunction), the evidence for its effect on sex drive per se is limited. The rating reflects this moderate but not conclusive evidence.
