Evidence supporting the use of: Curculigo orchicides
For the health condition: Sex Drive (low)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Curculigo orchioides, commonly known as Kali Musli, has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other systems of traditional medicine as an aphrodisiac and to support male sexual health, including the treatment of low sex drive. Historical texts such as the Charaka Samhita mention its use for enhancing vigor and vitality. Folk medicine regards it as a “rasayana” herb, believed to rejuvenate the reproductive system and boost libido.
Scientific studies supporting this use are limited and mostly preclinical. Some animal studies have suggested that extracts of Curculigo orchioides may increase sexual behavior, sperm count, and testosterone levels in rodents. For example, studies published in journals such as Phytotherapy Research and Indian Journal of Experimental Biology have reported aphrodisiac and androgenic effects in male rats. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the evidence remains insufficient for definitive scientific validation.
In summary, the use of Curculigo orchioides to support sex drive is primarily justified by its longstanding role in traditional medicine, with preliminary animal data offering some support but not enough for a strong scientific endorsement.
