Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Eurycoma longifolia (commonly known as tongkat ali) has a long history of traditional use as an aphrodisiac and male tonic in Southeast Asian medicine. In recent years, scientific studies have begun to examine its effects on sexual health and libido. Several randomized, placebo-controlled human trials have found that supplementation with standardized Eurycoma longifolia extract can improve aspects of sexual function, including libido, erectile function, and satisfaction, particularly in men with low testosterone or sexual dysfunction. Proposed mechanisms include increased testosterone production (possibly via stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis), reduced cortisol, and improved mood, all of which can indirectly support sexual desire. A 2012 clinical trial (Tambi et al., Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine) reported significant improvements in libido and sexual satisfaction in men after one month of tongkat ali supplementation. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews (e.g., Ismail et al., 2022, Andrologia) generally conclude that while evidence is promising, studies are often small, short-term, and sometimes industry-sponsored, which limits confidence in the findings. Reported side effects are generally mild. In summary, scientific evidence supports the traditional use of Eurycoma longifolia for low sex drive, but further large-scale, independent studies are needed to confirm efficacy and safety.
