Rating (out of 5): 2
Eurycomanone is a major quassinoid compound found in Eurycoma longifolia (commonly known as Tongkat Ali), a traditional medicinal plant used in Southeast Asia to support male sexual health and libido. Scientific studies have begun to investigate its effects on sex drive. Several animal studies and a limited number of small-scale human trials suggest that eurycomanone and Tongkat Ali extracts may enhance sexual function and libido, primarily by influencing testosterone levels and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. For example, some research has shown that supplementation with Tongkat Ali extract, which contains eurycomanone, can increase serum testosterone levels and improve sexual behavior in rodents. Small human trials have reported improvements in sexual libido and erectile function in men with low testosterone or mild erectile dysfunction. However, these studies often use whole plant extracts rather than isolated eurycomanone, and sample sizes are generally small, with short durations and modest effect sizes. Systematic reviews conclude that while preliminary findings are promising, high-quality, large-scale human clinical trials specifically assessing eurycomanone are still lacking. Thus, although the use of eurycomanone for low sex drive is gaining scientific attention, the current level of evidence is limited and does not yet provide robust clinical validation.
