Evidence supporting the use of: Fadogia agrestis
For the health condition: Sex Drive (low)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fadogia agrestis is primarily used to support sex drive (libido) based on traditional and folk medicine practices, particularly in parts of Africa where the plant is native. Traditionally, Fadogia agrestis has been used as an aphrodisiac and to enhance male sexual function. The scientific evidence to support these uses, however, is limited and primarily restricted to animal studies. Several rodent studies have indicated that extracts of Fadogia agrestis may increase sexual behavior and elevate testosterone levels, but these have not been replicated in human clinical trials. No robust, peer-reviewed human studies have confirmed its effectiveness or safety for increasing sex drive. As such, while there is a strong tradition of use and some preliminary animal data, scientific validation in humans is lacking. Safety data is also limited, and there are concerns about potential toxicity at high doses in animal studies. Therefore, its use for supporting or treating low sex drive is based more on traditional practices than on rigorous scientific evidence, with the current body of evidence meriting a low rating.
