Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Furostanols are a class of steroidal saponins commonly found in plants such as fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) and various species used in traditional medicine. The use of furostanol-containing plants to support or enhance sex drive (libido) has a long history in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. For example, fenugreek seeds, which are rich in furostanol saponins like diosgenin, have been used as an aphrodisiac and to treat male sexual dysfunction. Some clinical studies using fenugreek extracts (which contain furostanols) have shown modest improvements in measures of libido in men, but these studies are limited, often involve small sample sizes, and the active compounds are usually not isolated furostanols but rather crude extracts. There is a lack of robust, high-quality clinical data specifically tying isolated furostanols to improvements in sex drive. Most of the rationale for their use comes from traditional practices and the broader use of furostanol-rich plant extracts. Therefore, while there is some preliminary research and a strong traditional basis, scientific validation remains limited and inconclusive.
