Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Panax ginseng has been traditionally used in East Asian medicine to enhance sexual function and libido. More recently, several clinical studies and systematic reviews have investigated its effects on sexual function, particularly in men. The majority of the research focuses on erectile dysfunction (ED), with some studies demonstrating that Panax ginseng supplementation can improve erectile performance and sexual satisfaction compared to placebo. Proposed mechanisms include increased nitric oxide synthesis, improved blood flow, and modulation of hormonal profiles. For example, a 2008 systematic review published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology concluded that Panax ginseng appears to improve sexual function in men with ED, but noted the need for higher-quality trials.

There is less robust evidence regarding its effects on libido (sex drive) specifically, especially in women. Some small studies and anecdotal reports suggest a potential benefit, but these findings are not consistent or strong enough to be considered definitive. Overall, while there is some scientific support for Panax ginseng’s effectiveness in improving aspects of sexual function in men, the evidence for its use in treating low sex drive per se is moderate and further research is needed to clarify its efficacy and mechanisms in diverse populations.
