Rating (out of 5): 3

Ginsenosides are the primary active compounds found in ginseng, particularly Panax ginseng. The use of ginseng for enhancing sexual function and libido has a long tradition in Asian medicine, but in recent decades, scientific studies have investigated its efficacy more directly. Several randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have evaluated the effects of ginsenosides on sexual function, particularly in men with erectile dysfunction (ED) and low libido. Some studies suggest that ginsenosides may improve sexual arousal and performance by promoting nitric oxide synthesis, leading to enhanced blood flow and improved erectile function. For example, a 2008 systematic review in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology found moderate evidence supporting the use of Panax ginseng for ED, though limitations in study size and quality were noted. Animal studies also suggest potential mechanisms, such as modulation of hormone levels and neurochemical pathways associated with sexual behavior.

However, the quality of clinical evidence remains mixed, with some studies showing only modest benefits and others reporting no significant effects. There are few high-quality, large-scale trials specifically targeting low sex drive (libido) rather than erectile function. Most evidence supports at least some benefit, but more robust research is needed to establish clear clinical recommendations. Overall, the use of ginsenosides for supporting sex drive is justified by both traditional use and a moderate level of scientific evidence.
