Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Macamides are bioactive compounds uniquely found in maca (Lepidium meyenii), a root native to the Andes. Maca has a long history of traditional use for enhancing fertility and sexual function in both men and women. Modern research suggests that macamides may play a role in these effects, as they are thought to influence endocannabinoid signaling and hormonal balance, potentially affecting libido. However, most clinical studies on sexual function have tested whole maca root powder or extracts, not isolated macamides. Some small-scale human studies have shown that maca supplementation can improve sexual desire in both men and women, with a modest effect size compared to placebo. The mechanism is not fully understood, but macamides are often cited as one of the key active constituents.
Despite these findings, the evidence is still preliminary. Most trials are small, short-term, and do not specifically isolate macamides as the active agent. The available data provide some scientific basis for the use of macamides in supporting sex drive, but the overall quality and quantity of evidence are limited. Thus, while there is emerging scientific support, more rigorous research is needed before strong conclusions can be drawn about the efficacy of macamides themselves for low sex drive.
