For the health condition: Sex Drive (low)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Protodioscin is a steroidal saponin compound found in several plants, most notably Tribulus terrestris. Its use to support or treat low sex drive (libido) is primarily based on traditional medicine practices, particularly in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. Historically, extracts from Tribulus terrestris containing protodioscin have been used as aphrodisiacs and to improve sexual function and vitality in men and women.
The scientific evidence supporting protodioscin's efficacy in enhancing libido is limited and mixed. Some animal studies suggest that protodioscin may increase androgen production (such as testosterone or DHEA), which could theoretically influence libido. There are a few small human trials, but these often use whole plant extracts rather than isolated protodioscin, and the results are inconsistent. Some studies report mild improvements in sexual desire or function, while others find no significant effect compared to placebo.
Systematic reviews generally conclude that while Tribulus terrestris and its main active constituent protodioscin are traditionally used to support sexual health and libido, high-quality clinical evidence is lacking. Most health authorities do not endorse its use for this purpose due to insufficient robust data. Thus, the justification for using protodioscin for low sex drive rests more on traditional practice than on scientific validation.
