Cineole (also known as eucalyptol) is a naturally occurring compound found in eucalyptus oil and other plant essential oils. Its use for supporting or treating sinus infections (rhinosinusitis) is supported by scientific evidence, though the strength of this evidence is moderate. Several randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials have investigated cineole’s effects on upper respiratory tract infections, including acute and chronic sinusitis. For example, a double-blind study published in the journal Laryngoscope (2004) demonstrated that oral cineole (200 mg, 3 times daily) significantly improved symptoms such as headache, nasal congestion, and nasal discharge compared to placebo in patients with acute non-purulent rhinosinusitis. Additional studies have shown that cineole possesses anti-inflammatory, mucolytic (mucus-thinning), and mild antimicrobial properties, which may explain its efficacy in relieving sinus symptoms. Cineole is thought to reduce the viscosity of nasal mucus, facilitate drainage, and decrease inflammation in the sinus mucosa. It is generally well-tolerated when used orally in standard therapeutic doses. However, while evidence supports its use as an adjunctive therapy for symptom relief, cineole is not a substitute for antibiotics when a bacterial infection is present, and guidelines recommend its use primarily for mild to moderate cases or as supportive care. Overall, current evidence justifies the use of cineole for sinus infection symptom relief, but more extensive, high-quality studies are needed to further clarify its efficacy and optimal use.
