Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Citrus reticulata (mandarin orange) peel, known as "Chen Pi" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use primarily for respiratory and digestive ailments. In TCM, Chen Pi is often included in herbal formulas to address "phlegm-dampness" and to facilitate the flow of "Qi" (vital energy), which practitioners believe can help alleviate symptoms such as nasal congestion and sinus discomfort. This traditional usage is the basis for its inclusion in remedies for sinus infection (sinusitis), where it is thought to help reduce mucus and promote drainage. However, scientific evidence directly supporting the use of Citrus reticulata for sinus infection is limited. While some laboratory studies suggest that extracts from Citrus reticulata peels have mild anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, these findings are preliminary and not specific to sinusitis. No clinical trials have conclusively demonstrated its efficacy in treating sinus infections in humans. Therefore, its use for sinusitis remains primarily rooted in tradition rather than validated by rigorous scientific research.
