Cyperus species, such as Cyperus rotundus (commonly known as nutgrass or "motha"), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Unani. In these systems, Cyperus is often used to address conditions involving inflammation, congestion, and pain, which can be associated with sinus infections. For example, in Ayurveda, Cyperus is considered to have properties that balance doshas and alleviate symptoms like headache and nasal congestion. In TCM, it is sometimes used in formulations aimed at regulating Qi and reducing dampness, which can be related to sinus and respiratory issues. However, while traditional texts cite Cyperus for ailments that include symptoms similar to those of sinus infection, there is very little modern scientific research specifically validating its efficacy for treating sinusitis or sinus infections. Most available studies focus on Cyperus's anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties in general, rather than its direct application to sinus health. Thus, while there is a traditional basis for its use in this context, the evidence is limited and largely anecdotal, with little clinical data to support definitive claims for sinus infection treatment.
