Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ajowan (Trachyspermum ammi), also known as ajwain or carom seeds, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani. It is commonly employed to address respiratory issues, including sinus congestion and related symptoms. The seeds contain thymol, an essential oil with antimicrobial and expectorant properties, which is believed to help clear mucus and relieve nasal blockage. Traditional practitioners often recommend ajowan seeds, either chewed directly or used in steam inhalation, to support sinus health and alleviate symptoms like stuffy nose and headaches associated with sinusitis.

However, while there is some in vitro evidence supporting the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of ajowan’s constituents, there is limited direct scientific research specifically evaluating its efficacy for sinus support in humans. Most references to its use for sinus issues derive from ethnobotanical records and herbal medicine texts rather than clinical trials. Therefore, the support for ajowan’s use in the sinus body system is primarily traditional, and the strength of the evidence is modest.
