Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Betony (Stachys officinalis) has a long history of traditional use in European herbal medicine, particularly for ailments affecting the head, including headaches, anxiety, and sinus-related complaints. Historical herbal texts, such as those by Nicholas Culpeper and John Gerard, mention betony as beneficial for "all diseases of the head," which has been interpreted to include sinus issues. Traditional use suggests betony was employed to help clear the head and relieve congestion, often as a tea or infusion. However, modern scientific research on betony’s effects on the sinuses is extremely limited. While betony contains compounds such as tannins and iridoids with mild anti-inflammatory properties, there is no robust clinical evidence demonstrating its effectiveness for sinus support or treatment of sinus congestion in humans. Thus, its reputation in supporting the sinus body system is based almost entirely on traditional usage rather than validated scientific research. Due to the lack of clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically focused on sinus conditions, the evidence rating is low.
