Rating (out of 5): 1

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and North America. Historically, catnip has been used for its mild sedative effects, as well as a remedy for colds, coughs, and various respiratory complaints. Some herbal traditions suggest that catnip tea or infusions can help soothe congestion and ease sinus discomfort due to its gentle anti-inflammatory and calming effects on mucous membranes. However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies specifically validating catnip’s effectiveness for supporting the sinuses or treating sinusitis. The active compounds, such as nepetalactone, have shown mild antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory activity in some laboratory studies, but these findings have not been directly linked to sinus health in humans. As such, while catnip’s use for sinus support is rooted in folk and traditional herbal practices, there is minimal scientific evidence to substantiate these claims, and its efficacy for this purpose remains largely anecdotal.
