For the body system: Sinuses
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Centipeda (commonly referring to Centipeda minima) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine for supporting the sinuses and respiratory health. Traditionally, it is known as "E Bu Shi Cao" and is employed in herbal formulations to relieve symptoms associated with sinus congestion, allergic rhinitis, and other nasal or respiratory complaints. The herb is believed to clear heat, reduce swelling, and alleviate inflammation, thereby promoting sinus drainage and comfort. There are some in vitro and animal studies suggesting anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties of Centipeda extracts, which might explain its traditional use for upper respiratory issues. However, high-quality clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most of the evidence for its effectiveness in sinus support remains anecdotal or based on traditional use rather than robust scientific validation. Therefore, while Centipeda is used for sinus support in traditional medicine systems, its efficacy is not strongly established by modern research, and caution should be exercised regarding dosage and safety, especially in self-medication or use outside of traditional practitioner guidance.
