Common Plantain (Plantago major) has a long history of traditional use in supporting respiratory and sinus health. In European folk medicine, plantain leaves have been used for centuries as a remedy for coughs, colds, and various upper respiratory tract issues, including sinus congestion. Preparations such as teas and extracts were believed to soothe mucous membranes and reduce inflammation in the airways, which could help relieve sinus discomfort. The mucilaginous nature of the leaves provided a demulcent effect, thought to coat and calm irritated tissues. Some herbalists also use plantain in poultices for its purported anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial properties.

However, scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of Common Plantain for sinus health is limited. While some studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial compounds (such as aucubin and allantoin) in the plant, research has mostly focused on its effects on wound healing and general respiratory irritation, not directly on sinusitis or sinus support. Therefore, while its use is well-rooted in traditional practices, clinical validation for this specific application is lacking.
