Cubeb (Piper cubeba), also known as tailed pepper, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, especially in Asian and Middle Eastern cultures. Historically, cubeb has been used for various ailments, including respiratory conditions. Its application as a support for the sinuses can be traced back to its use as an expectorant and for relieving symptoms associated with catarrh, bronchitis, and nasal congestion. The essential oil and dried berries have been included in formulations aimed at clearing mucus and easing breathing, likely due to their pungent, aromatic properties which may act as mild irritants to promote discharge of secretions.

However, scientific evidence specifically validating cubeb for sinus support is limited. While some in vitro studies have suggested antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of cubeb oil, there is a lack of robust clinical trials directly assessing its efficacy for sinus health in humans. Most references to its sinus-related benefits are found in traditional medicine texts rather than peer-reviewed scientific literature. Therefore, while its use for supporting the sinuses is rooted in tradition, and some of its chemical constituents could theoretically offer benefits, the overall evidence rating remains low due to insufficient modern clinical data.
