Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Echinacea, particularly in mixed species or extracts, has a long history of traditional use in supporting upper respiratory health, which includes the sinuses. Native American tribes originally used Echinacea preparations for a variety of ailments, including infections and inflammation related to the respiratory tract. In modern herbalism, Echinacea is commonly recommended to help with symptoms of the common cold, which often involves sinus congestion and discomfort. The rationale is based on Echinacea’s purported immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically ease sinus symptoms or support the body’s response to upper respiratory tract infections.

However, scientific evidence specifically supporting Echinacea’s efficacy for sinus health is limited. Most clinical research on Echinacea has focused on its effect on the duration and severity of the common cold, with mixed results. Some studies suggest a modest benefit in reducing cold symptoms, while others show no significant effect compared to placebo. There is little direct clinical evidence that Echinacea effectively supports sinus function or treats sinusitis. Nonetheless, its widespread traditional use for respiratory and sinus-related complaints is well-documented.

Given the lack of robust scientific validation specifically for sinus support, but with a strong traditional precedent, Echinacea (mixed) rates a 2 on the evidence scale for supporting the sinuses body system.
