Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Echinacea tennesseensis, a species of the Echinacea genus native to Tennessee, is traditionally used for its immunomodulatory properties. Historically, various Echinacea species—primarily E. purpurea and E. angustifolia—have been used in North American herbal medicine to support respiratory health, with the intent of alleviating symptoms such as congestion and inflammation often associated with sinus issues. Indigenous peoples and early settlers used Echinacea preparations for a range of ailments, including infections and respiratory complaints. However, most of the documented traditional use and any clinical research has focused on other Echinacea species, not specifically E. tennesseensis. There is very limited direct scientific investigation into E. tennesseensis itself for sinus or upper respiratory support. The use of this species for sinuses is therefore justified mainly by extrapolation from traditional uses of related Echinacea species and general herbal tradition, rather than robust scientific data. As such, the evidence for E. tennesseensis supporting sinus health should be considered weak and primarily traditional, with a lack of species-specific clinical trials or pharmacological studies.
