Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

English Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) has a long history of traditional use in herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and North America. It has been used to help alleviate symptoms of respiratory tract conditions, including those affecting the sinuses, such as sinusitis, colds, and congestion. Traditional herbalists have valued English Plantain for its purported anti-inflammatory, astringent, and soothing properties, which may help reduce mucous membrane irritation and support sinus comfort. Preparations include teas, tinctures, and syrups made from the leaves.

However, scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. Most available research on Plantago lanceolata focuses on its general anti-inflammatory or wound-healing effects, rather than direct clinical studies on sinus health. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically benefit sinus health, but robust human clinical trials are lacking. Therefore, while traditional use is well established, the evidence base is not strong, resulting in a moderate rating for the support of the sinuses body system.
