Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ground Ivy (Glechoma hederacea) has a long history of traditional use for supporting the sinuses and respiratory tract. In European folk medicine, Ground Ivy was commonly used as a remedy for catarrh, sinusitis, and other inflammatory conditions of the mucous membranes, including those affecting the sinuses. Historical herbal literature, including works from Nicholas Culpeper and other herbalists of the 16th to 19th centuries, often mention its use for "stopping of the head" (nasal congestion) and for clearing phlegm from the sinuses and chest. The plant contains volatile oils, terpenoids, and flavonoids, which may contribute to its traditional applications for respiratory discomfort.

Despite its frequent mention in ethnobotanical sources, there is limited modern scientific research specifically validating Ground Ivy’s effectiveness for sinus support. Few clinical studies are available, and those that exist typically focus on its general anti-inflammatory or antioxidant properties rather than direct effects on the sinuses. Therefore, while its use is justified primarily by tradition and historical precedent, strong scientific validation is lacking.
