Rating (out of 5): 2

Hydrastine is an alkaloid found in the plant Hydrastis canadensis, commonly known as goldenseal. Traditionally, goldenseal has been used in North American herbal medicine, particularly by indigenous peoples and later by European settlers, to support respiratory health and alleviate symptoms associated with sinus congestion, such as nasal discharge and inflammation. The rationale for its use was largely based on its bitter taste, presumed astringent properties, and observed effects in folk practice.

While hydrastine is one of the primary active compounds of goldenseal, there is little to no direct clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness specifically for sinus support or sinusitis. Limited laboratory studies suggest hydrastine has mild vasoconstrictive and anti-inflammatory effects, which could theoretically reduce mucous membrane swelling. However, robust human trials are lacking, and most modern scientific reviews conclude there is insufficient evidence to recommend hydrastine or goldenseal for sinus health. Therefore, its continued use for this purpose is primarily based on traditional practice rather than validated by contemporary science.
