Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Japanese Elder, also known as Sambucus sieboldiana, has a history of traditional use in East Asian medicine, including Japanese and Chinese herbal practices. While the more commonly referenced "elder" in Western herbal medicine is Sambucus nigra (European elder), Japanese Elder shares some phytochemical similarities, such as the presence of flavonoids and phenolic compounds. Traditional uses have included remedies for colds, respiratory issues, and sinus-related discomfort. The berries and flowers are often prepared as teas, syrups, or decoctions intended to help alleviate symptoms such as nasal congestion or sinus pressure. However, scientific studies specifically examining Japanese Elder for sinus support are limited, and most research has focused on Sambucus nigra, which has shown some efficacy in reducing the duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms—potentially benefiting the sinuses indirectly. There is little to no rigorous clinical evidence directly supporting Japanese Elder’s effectiveness for sinus health. Thus, its use is primarily justified by traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. Caution is also warranted, as some parts of elder plants can be toxic if not properly prepared.
