Rating (out of 5): 2

Japanese Mint (Mentha arvensis), also known as cornmint, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asia. Its essential oil, rich in menthol, has been used in folk remedies to alleviate respiratory discomfort and support sinus health. Traditionally, Japanese Mint oil has been inhaled or applied topically (as a balm) to help clear nasal passages, reduce congestion, and provide a cooling sensation that eases breathing. These practices are similar to those involving peppermint oil (Mentha piperita) in Western herbal traditions.

From a scientific standpoint, menthol is known to interact with cold receptors in the nasal mucosa, which can create a subjective feeling of improved airflow, even if it does not physically open nasal passages. There is some limited clinical evidence that menthol-containing preparations can temporarily relieve the perception of nasal congestion, but robust clinical trials specifically investigating Japanese Mint for sinus support are lacking. Most available studies focus on menthol in general or on peppermint oil. Therefore, while the traditional use is well established, scientific validation specific to Japanese Mint and the sinus system remains limited.

In summary, Japanese Mint is traditionally used to support sinus health through symptomatic relief of congestion, but the scientific evidence directly supporting its efficacy for the sinuses is weak to moderate and primarily extrapolated from menthol’s effects in general.
