Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, for supporting respiratory and sinus health. Traditionally, licorice root is believed to soothe mucous membranes, reduce throat irritation, and help with symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, including those affecting the sinuses. In TCM, it is often included in formulas to harmonize and enhance the effects of other herbs, and to “clear heat and toxins” which can be associated with sinus congestion.

From a scientific standpoint, licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in laboratory studies. Some research suggests licorice extracts may help modulate immune responses and decrease inflammation in airway tissues. However, direct clinical studies specifically evaluating licorice for sinusitis or sinus support in humans are limited. Most available evidence is either preclinical or extrapolated from broader research on respiratory tract infections and inflammation.
Therefore, while licorice’s use for sinus support is primarily rooted in tradition, there is some mechanistic scientific rationale, though human clinical data is lacking. Caution is advised due to the potential for side effects with excessive or prolonged use, such as hypertension and hypokalemia, particularly in sensitive individuals.
