Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ligusticum species, such as Ligusticum porteri (commonly known as Osha root), have a long history of traditional use in supporting the sinuses and respiratory system, especially among Native American and traditional herbal medicine practitioners. Historically, the roots have been used as a remedy for upper respiratory tract complaints, including sinus congestion, coughs, and colds. The traditional approach involves using Ligusticum preparations as teas, tinctures, or chewed root to alleviate symptoms associated with sinus discomfort and respiratory irritation.

However, the scientific validation for these effects is limited. While some laboratory studies have identified the presence of phytochemicals such as phthalides, coumarins, and essential oils with potential antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The majority of evidence for Ligusticum’s use in sinus support is thus anecdotal or based on ethnobotanical reports rather than confirmed through modern scientific research. Therefore, its use for sinus support is best characterized as "traditional" with a moderate rating due to the consistency and history of traditional use, but not supported by high-level scientific evidence.
