Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ligusticum species, such as Ligusticum porteri (commonly known as Osha) and Ligusticum sinense, have a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine systems, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Native American herbalism, to support respiratory health and the sinuses. In TCM, Ligusticum (notably Ligusticum chuanxiong) is sometimes used in formulas aimed at expelling wind and relieving sinus congestion, though more commonly for headaches and circulatory issues. In North American herbal traditions, Osha root is valued for its purported ability to help clear mucus and open the sinuses during colds and upper respiratory infections.
However, while these traditional uses are well-documented, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Ligusticum for sinus health is limited. There are some laboratory studies suggesting that extracts from certain Ligusticum species have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, or immune-modulating properties, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, while Ligusticum is traditionally used for sinus support, this use is not strongly validated by modern scientific research, and most claims are based on historical practice rather than scientific consensus.
