Rating (out of 5): 3

Magnolia biondii, commonly referred to as biond magnolia, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), particularly for supporting the sinuses and respiratory system. The flower buds, known as Xin Yi Hua, are traditionally used to treat nasal congestion, sinusitis, and related symptoms. Ancient and modern TCM texts describe its use for "dispersing wind-cold" and "unblocking the nasal passages." Preparations of Magnolia biondii are commonly included in herbal formulas for sinus health, often combined with other botanicals like Xanthium and Angelica dahurica. The essential oils and extracts from the buds are believed to have anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties, which may explain their traditional application in sinus complaints.

Scientific research on Magnolia biondii is limited compared to other Magnolia species. However, some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts of Magnolia species possess anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and antimicrobial effects, which could theoretically benefit the upper respiratory tract and sinuses. Nevertheless, these findings are preliminary and have not been robustly validated in human clinical trials. Most current support for Magnolia biondii’s use in sinus health is rooted in traditional usage rather than direct scientific validation.
