Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pine (Pinus spp.), particularly pine needles and pine essential oil, has a longstanding history of traditional use for supporting respiratory health, including the sinuses. Folk medicine in various cultures has used pine extracts and inhalations for their expectorant, decongestant, and anti-inflammatory properties. The aroma of pine is believed to help open nasal passages and facilitate easier breathing, which forms the basis of its traditional use for sinus support.

While there are limited clinical studies directly evaluating pine for sinus support in humans, laboratory and animal studies have documented that pine essential oil possesses antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. The volatile compounds in pine oil, such as alpha-pinene, have shown effectiveness against certain bacteria and fungi that can contribute to sinus infections. Additionally, inhaling steam with pine essential oil is a common home remedy for clearing nasal congestion and soothing irritated sinus tissues.

Despite these traditional uses and some supportive in vitro evidence, there is a lack of robust human clinical trials demonstrating clear efficacy of pine specifically for sinus issues. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition and plausibly supported by preliminary scientific findings, its overall evidence rating remains moderate (2/5), pending more rigorous studies.
