Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Plantain (Plantago major), commonly known as English plantain, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for supporting respiratory health, including the sinuses. Historically, both the leaves and seeds have been used in teas, tinctures, and poultices to ease symptoms associated with upper respiratory tract irritations such as sinus congestion, coughs, and catarrh. The traditional rationale is based on plantain's purported anti-inflammatory, astringent, and mucilaginous properties, which are thought to soothe irritated mucous membranes and reduce inflammation in the airways, including the sinuses. While there is a solid traditional basis for the use of plantain in sinus support, the scientific evidence is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Plantago major extracts possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities, which could theoretically benefit conditions involving sinus inflammation or infection. However, robust human clinical trials specifically evaluating plantain for sinus health are lacking. Most references in scientific literature focus on its general effects on respiratory tract inflammation and wound healing. Thus, while tradition supports its use and there is a plausible biological rationale, the strength of evidence does not reach the highest levels of scientific validation.
