Rating (out of 5): 2

Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme originally isolated from bacteria in the intestines of silkworms. It has been used, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia, as a supplement aimed at reducing inflammation and supporting sinus health. The scientific basis for its use in sinus support comes from its proposed ability to break down protein-based debris, thin mucus, and reduce inflammation, which could theoretically help clear the sinuses and relieve symptoms of sinusitis.

Some clinical studies have evaluated Serrapeptase in the context of ENT (ear, nose, and throat) conditions. For example, a few small trials from the 1980s and 1990s reported reduced swelling, improved mucociliary clearance, and decreased viscosity of nasal mucus in patients with chronic sinusitis or after sinus surgery. However, these studies tend to be limited in size, quality, and often lack rigorous controls. Systematic reviews generally conclude that while there is some evidence of benefit, it is weak and further high-quality research is needed to confirm effectiveness and safety.

Overall, the use of Serrapeptase for sinus support is based on plausible mechanisms and preliminary clinical evidence, but it lacks strong, large-scale scientific validation. Regulatory agencies do not currently endorse its use for this purpose, and more research is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
