Usnea, commonly known as "Old Man's Beard," has been traditionally used in herbal medicine, including for support of the sinuses and respiratory system. Historical use centers on its application as an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent. Traditional herbalists have employed Usnea in tinctures, teas, and extracts for conditions such as sinus infections, colds, and upper respiratory tract infections. Its use is largely rooted in folk medicine, with Native American and European traditions citing Usnea for its purported ability to address issues involving mucous membranes, including those in the sinuses.

From a scientific perspective, Usnea contains usnic acid and other compounds with demonstrated antibacterial and antifungal properties in laboratory settings. However, robust clinical trials specifically addressing its efficacy for sinus health or sinus infections in humans are lacking. Most available evidence is limited to in vitro studies or anecdotal reports. As such, while there is a plausible basis for its traditional use—given its antimicrobial constituents—the lack of strong human data means its effectiveness for supporting the sinuses remains unproven by modern scientific standards. Thus, the rationale for using Usnea for sinus support is primarily traditional, with limited scientific validation.
